TRG's John Potter and Andy Lally just missed winning round two of
the Grand-Am KONI Sports Car Challenge GS class today at
Homestead-Miami Speedway. The team was edged, by another Porsche, for
the top spot in the GS category by a mere 0.133 seconds. In the team
No. 39 DigiTrust Group/Adam's Polishes/Fox River Coffee Racer's
Roast/TRG Porsche 997 for Duncan Ende and Spencer Pumpelly ended the
two-and-a-half-hour race in 22nd.
With just 30 minutes left in
the race, the team called Lally to the pits on lap 79 for a fresh set
of Hoosier tires. Lally proceeded to hunt down the leading No. 18
Porsche. With just four laps remaining, without the help of caution
flags, Lally was gaining on the leader by almost a second a lap. On the
final lap Lally used his NASCAR drafting skills to try and draft by the
leader but came up inches short of victory.
Potter started the
No. 41 Magnus Racing/TRG Porsche 997 from his 11th place qualifying
position and turned the car over to Lally in a position to win.
"I
was really happy with how this entire weekend shaped up," Potter said.
"We had a strong and flawless car all weekend and of course Andy's
drive was nothing short of incredible. Hats off to the TRG crew and I
look forward to racing against Andy at VIR and possibly teaming up more
in the future."
"It was a great day again for TRG and the entire
TRG crew," Lally said. "TRG again prepared an incredible car that I
could drive to 10/10ths. It was hopefully the first of many podiums for
John and me. This was a great jump in the points for us. It was a great
call to take tires when we did. We just came up a couple inches short."
In
the No. 39 DigiTrust Group/Adam's Polishes/Fox River Coffee Racer's
Roast/TRG Porsche 997 Ende and Pumpelly had a challenging day that
included contact and some mechanical issues placing them in 22nd on the
day. Ende had a great qualifying effort putting the No. 39 in the fifth
row on the starting grid.
"It was a rough day for the 39 car,"
Ende said. "We had a solid car, and performed an awesome pit stop.
Unfortunately right after Spencer took over something broke. The guys
did am awesome job getting the car back out on track for us to get some
points. We are still in points contention and looking forward to the
next event."
"Duncan put in a fantastic stint and we had a great
car unfortunately we had a mechanical failure right after the pit
stop," Pumpelly said. "We had some light contact afterward, but nothing
serious. The TRG guys did an awesome job getting us back out on track
and able to finish for some valuable points."
Kevin Buckler, TRG team owner, was thrilled with the results but still wants more.
"John
and Andy did a great job all weekend," Buckler said. "We made the right
call to get Andy on fresh tires for the run to the checker. We just
came up a few inches short. It was great to watch. Duncan and Spencer
had a little tougher day. We had unforeseen part issue and then some on
track contact. They qualified well, raced well and will be back
stronger than ever at New Jersey. We just need some power. Our team
performs flawlessly, but we never pass anyone. We have to rely on
others mistakes or misfortunes and that is not racing."
The Grand-Am KONI Sports Car Challenge will run round three at New Jersey Motorsports Park on May 2.
